Refreshing a Unit Bathroom with a Premium Vanity Upgrade in Wolli Creek

Newly installed white bathroom vanity and mirrored shaving cabinet in a Wolli Creek unit by TM Pro Plumbing.

Upgrading the fixtures in a unit bathroom is one of the quickest ways to improve both the look and functionality of the space. Apartment and unit bathrooms often have limited layouts, meaning every centimeter of storage and counter space counts.

We recently wrapped up a straightforward but highly effective bathroom refresh for a client living in a unit down in Wolli Creek. The owner wanted to modernise their main bathroom without committing to a full, costly renovation. By replacing the outdated vanity and adding a coordinated shaving cabinet, we managed to completely transform the feel of the room while maximizing storage.

Here is a breakdown of how we approached this Wolli Creek plumbing job from start to finish.

The Problem: Outdated Storage and Worn Fixtures

The existing bathroom vanity in the Wolli Creek unit had seen better days. The old cabinet was showing signs of moisture damage around the kickboard, which is incredibly common with budget laminates over time. On top of that, the old basin design took up most of the counter space, leaving almost no room for daily essentials.

The homeowner also lacked functional eye-level storage. The old mirror was glued directly to the wall tiles, offering zero utility.

When dealing with unit plumbing, you have to be mindful of fixed pipework locations. Unlike a house where you can easily drop beneath the floorboards to relocate drainage, a unit typically relies on concrete slabs and common waste stacks. This means the new vanity unit needed to fit the existing footprint perfectly while providing a much cleaner, modern aesthetic.

The Solution: Tailored Vanity and Shaving Cabinet Installation

Our team supplied a practical, tradesman-like solution to lift the appearance of the entire bathroom. The plan was to carefully remove the old unit, clean up the footprint, install a premium freestanding vanity, and mount a matching shaving cabinet above it.

Disconnection and Safe Removal

The first step on any bathroom job is isolating the water supply. In a unit block in Wolli Creek this involves locating the individual unit main control valve, usually found under a laundry tub or in a cupboard. With the hot and cold water lines isolated and drained, we removed the old basin tapware and trap.

We carefully detached the old vanity from the wall tiles so as not to cause any damage to the surrounding splashback. We also safely removed the old mirror from the wall to make way for the recessed storage cabinet.

Plumbing Rough-In Alignment

Now that the old cabinet was out of the way, we had a look at the existing hot and cold copper pipework and the PVC waste pipe. The valves were a little stiff so we replaced the old mini cistern cocks with some good quality quarter turn washing machine valves to make sure the homeowner can easily isolate the taps in the future if required.

We also aligned the new vanity back-panel and drilled the penetrations for the waste and water supply pipes exactly, to get a nice tight clean fit. The inside of the cupboard looks tidy.

Installation and Sealing

The new vanity was levelled perfectly using adjustable feet, then secured firmly into the wall studs. We dropped the new basin top in place, connected a new space-saving bottle trap to the waste pipe to keep the cupboard space wide open, and installed the new tapware.

Next, we mounted the new shaving cabinet directly above the basin. This added significant storage at eye level, removing clutter from the countertop.

Finally, we used premium, anti-fungal bathroom silicone to seal all the edges along the tiles and the basin rim. This stops water from getting behind the unit and protects the new investment from water damage in the future.

Why a Quality Vanity Upgrade Matters for Wolli Creek Apartments:

Many unit blocks in Wolli Creek feature compact bathroom layouts. Choosing a modern vanity with integrated drawer systems rather than old-fashioned cupboards means you can actually use the space at the back of the unit. Adding a shaving cabinet creates an open, bright feel by reflecting light, while hiding toothbrushes and cosmetics out of plain sight.

As local plumbers, we make sure that all connections meet Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3500). Property managers and strata bodies require certified plumbing work for any modifications in units to protect the building from structural water leaks. Hiring a licensed professional ensures your insurance remains valid and your plumbing remains trouble-free.
